About
Greetings! I'm a doctoral candidate in History at the University of St Andrews. My research focuses on the transformation of the Iranian bureaucracy in the early twentieth century.Previously I did two master's degrees at the University of Cambridge, one in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (2023) and Economic and Social History (2021). I started my academic career at the George Washington University where I studied International Affairs and Economics. I have worked on a a range of geographies and periods. For my first and second degrees I was mostly interested in labour economics in the third world, writing about migrant workers from the Philippines in the 2010s and female textile workers in Hong Kong and Bombay post-World War II. For my third and current degrees I have developed an interest in the administrative history and sociology of the Middle East across all periods, ancient to modern.I have worked in both the not-for-profit and private sectors. From 2017-19 I worked at Urban Institute, a leading social and economic affairs think tank in Washington, DC. You can find a list of my publications from that time here: https://www.urban.org/author/hannah-hassani. More recently I worked as a consultant between London, Milan, and Turin for the Business Performance Institute.Outside my academic work I write contemporary and historical fiction. Check out my blog (soon to be transferred to Substack) for a sample of my writing.
